Cary-Grove High School is a high school in Cary, Illinois, USA; it is part of Community High School District 155. In 1995, it was the subject of much news attention after the Fox River Grove level crossing accident that killed seven students.[1] In 2006, on the anniversary of the accident, another Cary-Grove student, Justin Glassmyer, was killed at the same crossing.[2]

Cary-Grove opened in 1961. Originally, the school colors (purple and white) and the tune for the school song were borrowed from Northwestern University. In 1978, while the school colors remained purple and white, the sports, cheerleader and band uniforms became navy and white. During the 1980s, the change to navy blue and white became official.

Athletics

The school's team mascot is the "Trojan."

The football team won the 2009 state title against Providence Catholic High School, as IHSA 6A Champions, and they finished second in 2004.

The 2009 Women's Volleyball team won the state title. It was the first state title in the school's history.[3][4] In 2010, the Volleyball team was ranked Number 1 in the nation by various sources, but lost the state final game to Lyons Township High School snapping their 57 match win streak and ended their season at 41-1 overall.[5] The 2011 Women's Volleyball team is headed off to State for the third year in a row. On November 5, 2011, the Cary Grove Trojans Women's Volleyball team won their playoff game against the Stevenson Patriots. [6]

Music

Cary-Grove's music program has a history of achievement. In the 1970s, the Jazz Band consistently won top honors at the Oak Lawn Jazz Festival in Oak Lawn, Illinois. In 1973 the show choir format was adopted when the school's swing choir began; an extracurricular group that performs contemporary music with choreography. Each year, choir students participate in Fall Follies, the Swing Choir Festival, nursing home tours, elementary school tours, the holiday trip to Chicago and the spring Musical. Most recently, Cary-Grove performed Curtains in March 2010 and Les Misèrables in March 2011. The show choir travels to Disney and Branson, Missouri on a rotational basis. The Trojan Marching Band and Pep Band can be seen at football and basketball games. Both band and choir students perform in Spring and Holiday concerts.

As of 2009, 15 different groups and ensembles, including the A Cappella Singers, Swing Choir, Jazz Choir, Bel Canto Choir, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble perform at the school.
